Church kids raise charity cash

Kids at Orchardhill parish church have smashed their target, set as part of an Oxfam challenge to ‘buy’ a farmyard — or the livestock needed — for a family in the developing world.

It costs the charity £482 to fund one, and by baking and making craft items to sell after Sunday services, the Orchardhill team managed to raise £589.29, which they handed over to Liz Sim, of the Clarkston Oxfam branch.

Over at Giffnock South church, reverend Catherine Beattie has been handing out cash — but for a good cause.

The reverend recently finished her children’s address by handing out £5 notes to each of the youngsters, in the hope that they will use it to fundraise for the church.

Catherine told The Extra: “We had been talking about how to make best use of your talents, and I realised the story tied in well with the fundraising we were embarking on for our new catering project.

“I decided to set our young people the challenge of using their talents — and my fivers — to see how they could grow each £5, perhaps through home baking, or some other activity.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how the children use their talents and have some fun as well — my only worry is that they bring their friends to Sunday School every week expecting me to hand out fivers!”
