Church Moderator visits Clydesdale

THE Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Right Rev William Hewitt, has just spent a week in Lanark Presbytery — enjoying an action-packed itinerary.

He preached at various churches, as well as visiting projects such as charity shop Choices in Carluke and the eco project at Forth.

The Moderator also visited Lanark Auction Market, where director Hunter Murray gave him a guided tour and he attended a meeting with farmers and cabinet secretary Richard Lochhead.

At New Lanark he was welcomed by outgoing director Dr Jim Arnold and he and his wife Moira were given a tour.

As well as visits to Carluke, Carstairs, Biggar and Douglas, the Moderator managed to take part in a golf tournament at Lanark Golf Course, where he finished in a very respectable second place.

He shared that place with Don MacKenzie and in first place was Iain Duncan.

William said: "I was perhaps at my most nervous when teeing off at the first hole at Lanark with so many watching...but it was a wonderful day."

During his visit, Mr Hewitt presented certificates to long-serving elders from a number of the churches in Lanark Presbytery.
