Cinema plan is back on the cards

G1 Group has submitted an application to Glasgow city council for a three-screen cinema at former nightclub Tusk — originally the Waverley cinema.

Councillor David Meikle has met with G1 to discuss the plan, and told The Extra: “The proposal is very much at the planning stage but hopefully it will progress positively.

“I believe a cinema in Shawlands can and will boost the town centre. Fingers crossed that the idea comes to life.”

MSPs Patrick Harvie and James Dornan also voiced support on Twitter this week, along with reader Jan Gray, who commented: “I would go — you make more of an effort if it’s local.”

However, some commented that a new multiplex at Silverburn (due to open in autumn) would threaten a small scale cinema, while others pointed to parking problems on busy Shawlands streets.

Facebook follower Michelle Stepney said: “An influx of cars shortly before each film starts will take up every available space in the area — a cinema with patrons parking close to the building would prove to be hellish for locals.”

Meanwhile, organisers of the Southside Film Festival have complained that they have not been included in discussions — although director Karen O’Hare “welcomes the prospect of a southside cinema”.

She told The Extra: “The festival was set up in response to the fact that there was no local cinema or local film events.

“G1 group has not yet approached Southside Film Festival about the cinema or what they plan to screen there — however, we would appreciate an approach on their plans for Shawlands.”

A spokesperson for G1 was unavailable for comment.

The bid is now with GCC’s planning office, although no date has been set for it to be discussed.
