City Deal cash to expand Barrhead business park

A local business project from the £1.13 billion Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal is underway in East Renfrewshire.

East Ren Council is breaking ground on 12 new units at Crossmill Business Park in Barrhead, with support from the eight-authority City Deal, also supported by Scottish ministers, COSLA and the Scottish Government Capital Grant Fund.

The units are expected to be ready for business by April 2016, joining seven buildings already let at the site.

Contractor WH Malcolm has pledged two new jobs and work experience placements, as well as sponsorship of a local sports club as a way of involving the community.

Councillor Tony Buchanan, convener for infrastructure and sustainable growth, said: “Crossmill Business Park is the first of our ambitious City Deal infrastructure projects and continues our successful transformation along the Glasgow Road corridor in Barrhead, bringing vacant land back into use to create first-class flexible business locations with greenspaces.

“Our inspiring plans for the future of the area have been accelerated thanks to East Ren’s £44m share of City Deal funding.”

He added a promise that “future projects will see investment in new business, leisure and homes supported by improved transportation links with Glasgow and beyond”.

The news from East Ren follows the Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal cabinet approving £67.16m funding for four infrastructure projects for South Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and Glasgow City Council — including an airport access project for a tram or train link to Glasgow Airport via Paisley.

Councillor Frank McAveety, cabinet chair, said: “Over the next few years, we will see massive infrastructural improvements in the Clyde Valley through the City Deal, making huge opportunities available for local people and businesses.”

As well as Glasgow City and East Renfrewshire councils, the City Deal includes authorities in East Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde, North and South Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire.
