City on fire with amazing displays

Guy Fawkes Night at GHA rugby club is the biggest of its kind in the area and it continued to increase its reputation with another spectacular show.

Giffnock police and the campus officers were in attendance at the firework display on Braidholm Road, while officers patrolled the area with fire crews from both Clarkston and Barrhead fire stations.

Event Director, Kenny Fairbairn told The Extra: “ Now in its 29th year another spectacular firew,ork display took place without any incident whatsoever.

“The club would like to thank the support of 
Giffnock police, the fire 
brigade and East 
Renfrewshire council in helping ensure a safe environment for all the southside community.

“Everybody enjoyed what is the largest firework display in the Southside of Glasgow.”

Meanwhile thousands more gathered to watch Scotland’s biggest public fireworks at Glasgow green.

The show had a sporting twist in honour of next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The city’s skyline was lit up to the sound of Eye Of The Tiger from the hit film Rocky and the signature tune from the award-winning Chariots Of Fire.

Organisers said more than 50,000 people turned out for the 20-minute spectacular.

Commonwealth batonbearers gymnast Cara Kennedy, triple-jumper Morgan McKinnon and swimmer Ruairi Kirkwood all addressed the crowd.

Lord Provost Sadie Docherty set off the display of around 3,000 fireworks.

Ms Docherty said: “Glasgow Fireworks is a joyous occasion.

“Italways brightens the sky and the faces of the many thousands who come to enjoy the spectacle.

“Glasgow is a world-class sporting city and our reputation owes a great deal to the thousands of unsung sporting heroes who work at grassroots level across our communities.”
