Claire Leghorn and pals raising cash for brother

Claire Leghorn and friends Nicola Brewer, Vicki McConville and Kirsty Hutcheson will be cycling around Millport this Saturday, March 28, for her 36-year-old brother Chris Broom.

Together, they will be raising much needed funds for the Smith-Magenis Syndrome Foundation.

Chris was diagnosed with Smith-Magenis Syndrome eight years ago; major features of this condition include mild to moderate intellectual disability, distinctive facial features, sleep disturbances and behavioural problems.

It is estimated that Smith–Magenis Syndrome affects a total of one in 25,000 people with the reason for the syndrome due to an abnormality in the person’s 17th chromosome.

Claire, who lives in Glenafeoch Road, said: “Chris is the oldest person in Scotland diagnosed with this condition and is one of only 25 diagnosed in Britain but the experts say there are far more people out there.

“As well as raising money I also want to raise awareness of what Smith-Magenis actually is. Chris has done really well since he was diagnosed and is a well-kent face in Carluke.”
