Clarkston leads the way on climate change

Eco-Congregation Scotland has been touring the baton - fashioned from a former church pew - since April, before presenting it at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, calling on negotiators to agree a deal that promotes global climate justice.

The baton arrived in Clarkston on November 19, welcomed by Clarkston Churches Together.

John Seenan, of the Clarkston group, told The Extra: “The intervention of prominent heads of state, including President Obama and Pope Francis, has elevated the subject of climate change to the top of the agenda of world issues and deserves our full-hearted support.

“The baton was taken on foot or by cycle to each of the churches involved, to arrive during their morning service of worship on Sunday.

“Most primary and secondary schools, as well as local Scouts, Guides, Brownies and Boys Brigade groups, also took part in the relay and it was presented to provost Alastair Carmichael who accepted it on behalf of East Renfrewshire Council.”

Our Lady of the Missions and St Joseph’s primaries and St Ninian’s High each gave their support to the cause, welcoming the baton at school assemblies throughout the week.

The baton was then taken to Paris by Dr Sheena Wurthmann, chair of the Eco-Congregation Scotland and a member of Netherlee Parish Church.
