Clydesdale Bank to close Bishopbriggs branch

Customers’ accounts at the branch at The Triangle will automatically be transferred to the bank’s head office in Glasgow city centre.

The local branch is one of nine to close in Scotland between July and September after the bank completed a review of its branch network. It said the move reflected the changing needs of customers and the lease of the building in Bishopbriggs is set to lapse.

A spokesperson for the lender said today that “wherever possible, frontline branch staff will be found roles either within other branches or elsewhere in the bank.”

Steve Fletcher, Head of Customer Banking Networks at Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank, added: “I understand this will not be welcome news for those who use this particular branch.

“These are difficult decisions but ones we must face as we try to keep up with the pace of change in the way people want to bank.

“We have to balance our investment to ensure we support demand where it is greatest, across mobile, online and branch services.

“Branches remain vitally important to us, and we continue to invest in them, the services they offer and when we offer them.

“I hope that the investment we’re making in the overall quality of our branch network, the big increase in Saturday opening and the availability of other ways to bank, like local Post Office counters, will minimise the effect of this announcement for customers.”

The bank said it would introduce longer Saturday opening hours at branches which already offer the service.

It will also introduce Saturday openings to an additional 13 branches in Scotland by the end of the year.

A bank spokesperson added: “However, a number of unsustainable and “lapsed-lease” locations will close, including the branch at Bishopbriggs, which will shut on 11th July.

“The bank will now place posters in the branch advising customers, and write to them at least 12 weeks before the branch closes to remind them of the alternative ways they can continue to manage their accounts including nearest branches, ATMs and Post Office counters - which all Clydesdale Bank

customers can use for day-to-day banking.”

The bank also said that in response to changing consumer behaviour, it will be introducing a new software app for mobile phones and tablets.

The nearest Saturday opening branch is at Hillhead in Glasgow’s west end or Queen Street in the city centre.
