Coffee mornings rake in charity cash

Last year, the cancer charity raised £15 million from 115,000 people across the UK — and there have been plenty of events taking place in your neighbourhood this year.

Jane Tobias and mum Rosalind Green held two coffee mornings — the first at Homeglen House in Giffnock last Friday.

Rosalind had asked along a special guest, actress and friend Ida Schuster (95), to call in — and Ida, who was also celebrating her birthday, happily obliged.

The event raised £546, and Jane’s event, on Sunday, raised a further £333.

The family run coffee mornings each year in memory of Jane’s late sister Mandy Benstock, who was diagnosed with breast cancer 14 years ago.

Jane told The Extra: “This charity in particular supported us through my late sister Mandy’s fight with cancer, and also through her passing last year — our coffee mornings are in Mandy’s honour.”

Over at Hawthorn Court in Clarkston, residents were joined by family and friends at a Macmillan event organised by Elizabeth Weston.

The coffee, tea and cakes went down at treat and the retirement home raised £640 — Mrs Weston thanks everyone for their donations, as well as Asda Newton Mearns for providing a gift card for goods sold at the coffee morning.
