Cold callers continue to target East Ren

POLICE have issued a warning as bogus callers continue to target the East Renfrewshire area.

According to inspector Alan Dickson, of Giffnock police station, enquiries are ongoing over one case in which an elderly man has forked out £22,000 since July to rogue traders claiming his roof needed repaired.

Inspector Dickson told The Extra: “There have been a number of incidents like this and we would ask residents to be very wary of cold callers because of it.

“The method appears to be that they make initial contact and find more and more problems, and then other people come calling claiming the householder’s details have been passed on regarding yet another problem.”

Vulnerable and elderly people in particular have been targeted, and residents are asked to keep an eye on neighbours - and for the people who return to their door again and again.

Information on East Renfrewshire council’s no cold callers campaign is available at the website, www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk and anyone with concerns is asked to call Giffnock police station on 532 5700 or non-emergency number 101.
