Cold calling campaign taken to the streets

EAST Renfrewshire officials joined forces at The Avenue last week to promote the ongoing message: say no to cold callers.

Trading standards, community police and East Ren council’s care and repair service set up stall at the Newton Mearns shopping centre to spread the word about the council’s Beat Bogus Callers campaign - focusing on doorstep and telephone scams.

The trading standards team has been issuing leaflets and promoting the use of its No Cold Calling stickers to residents worried about the issue — and more were handed out during the drive.

Senior trading standards officer Paul Holland said: “We will continue to work together to protect residents from cowardly fraudsters.

“They seek out our more vulnerable residents and attempt to extort thousands of pounds via doorstep and telephone scams.

“Property maintenance scams are a particular concern, and all the information we provide aims to prevent fraud and promote the resources available to residents.

“The doorstep is not the place to do business or hand over cash.”

Sergeant Susan Gillon, ERC’s community liaison officer, added: “It was great to see residents taking such an interet and looking to use the information provided to protect themselves and their neighbours from doorstep crime.

“We urge residents to report suspicious activity — such as cold callers offering to fix your roof or driveway — on the new 101 telephone number.”
