Community garden plans growing well

PLANS for a community garden at Rouken Glen Park are taking shape — and the public are invited on a walk this weekend to see what could become of the area.

The £50,000 Friends of Rouken Glen Park (FORG) project is funded through East Renfrewshire council’s recent Heritage Lottery fund award, and the aim of the garden is to cater to everyone in the neighbourhood — in particular, those with special needs.

The design for the old training garden is a tranquil landscape filled with sounds, scents and colours, and will include specially-designed paths for wheelchairs and pram users, and raised flower beds.

A pebble garden with fountain and circular stone seating will complete the transformation.

FORG chairman Gerald Levin told The Extra: “Our aim is to create a unique community garden that can be enjoyed by everyone and I hope that people will come along and have a look at the designs before work starts.

“We hope people will come forward to assist in this work.

“There will be all sorts of jobs in the future for people of all ages and abilities, from weeding and planting to grass-cutting and watering.”

Anyone interested in the project is invited along to open days on Saturday and Sunday (September 21-22), 1-3pm at the park’s former training garden, near the site of the feastRen festival event also running this weekend.
