Community shows its heart and fight

Concerned Waterfoot residents have banded together to
oppose a planned housing
development.

Gladman Developments has outlined plans to build 100 houses on 46 acres of land west of Glasgow Road.

As a result, locals have formed Waterfoot Action, a group which aims to give a voice to local opposition and co-ordinate a sustained campaign against the proposals.

Spokesman John McCourt told The Extra: “We believe that such a large scale development would further diminish our precious and ever-decreasing greenbelt.

“It would effectively destroy the character of Waterfoot and our community.

“This could just be the tip of the iceberg as far as development in this area is concerned.”

Campaigners believe the plans would also have a detrimental impact on neighbouring communities in East Renfrewshire.

John added: “This is not just about Waterfoot residents. This project will affect everyone in the area as it will put a huge strain on local schools, transport and infrastructure.”

At present a Proposal of Application Notice has been submitted and a public consultation has taken place. Both are compulsory steps required before a formal planning application.

A spokeswoman for East Renfrewshire council said: “The plan will go forward to the Scottish government for examination.

“The council will continue to defend the position that this site be retained as green belt.”
