Concerned mum warns about road dangers in Kirkintilloch town centre

DOZY parkers are putting the safety of children walking to school and other pedestrians in Kirkintilloch at risk, claims a worried mum.

Beckie Henney has warned there could be an accident due to the parking situation in David Donnelly Place – to the rear of the shops at Cowgate.

Beckie (31), who has two sons aged seven and two, said: “I have just witnessed a truck nearly crashing on the bend due to the way that drivers have parked their cars.

“I had to do a U-turn on that narrow road as the truck was totally stuck.

“I regularly walk this way as I have a son at Lairdsland Primary and every day I feel like we are taking a risk trying to get our kids safely to school.

“Surely the council should be bringing back traffic wardens or the police should be dealing with this very dangerous parking problem we now have in Kirkintilloch.

“I avoid using my wee one’s buggy now as you spend half your time having to walk on the roads.”

The mum added: “Dangerous parking is a major problem in Kirkintilloch and one the council needs to address before someone ends up getting seriously injured.”

Community Policing Inspector Keith Bartlett commented: “We have increased our patrols in the town centre area and will take action if any vehicles are found to be causing an unnecessary obstruction.

“The safety of children is paramount and drivers should take particular care in the vicinity of local schools.”

Thomas Glen, East Dunbartonshire Council’s director of development and regeneration, said: “The council is continuing to work towards the introduction of decriminalised parking and taking over the responsibility for parking enforcement from our colleagues in the police.

“Until that time the responsibility for dealing with illegal, dangerous or inconsiderate parking remains with the police.

“There are waiting restrictions in place in this area, and we are currently working with the police to ensure that they are enforced.”
