Condorrat’s working-class heroes to be honoured at special ceremony

YEARS of waiting to honour Condorrat’s working class heroes will be over on Saturday when a Memorial Wall will be unveiled at a very special event.

Locals and invited guests will congregate outside Condorrat Library for 11am where the first sight of the commemorative stonework is being keenly anticipated.

It is the community that has paid for it too - in their determination to pay tribute to three very different groups of brave men whose sacrifice has brought honour to Condorrat.

The wall is dedicated to the radical weavers who staged a workers uprising in 1820, soldiers who died in conflict and the local victims of the Auchengeich Mining Diaster in 1959.

No fewer than three fundraising dances were arranged by Condorrat Tenants & Residents Association to meet costs and it is the association’s chairwoman Kate McLean who will be first to speak at the event.

Her introduction will be followed up by words from Provost Tom Curley - and local celergy will give a dedication to the site.

Then, the association’s vice chairman John Burke will speak before wreaths are laid beside the wall.

Mr Burke believes that the wall is also a tribute to the people of Condorrat who have raised several thousand pounds to make the dream a reality.

He said: “The generosity they have shown at the three fundraising dances we had was unbelievable - and a lot of local businesses have made a big contribution too, whether through cash or a wee bottle of wine for our raffle.

“We wanted the wall to be made with local labour and Gerard Egan of Masonry Solutions has done so much for us,’’ said Mr Burke

“The wall is going to become a centrepiece for Condorrat,” he added.

A commemorative bench will also go on display and will bear the simple motto Weavers Rest.

The News will be on hand to cover this important event in full - see next week’s paper for details.
