Congestion woes cause outcry

A PLANNING application to extend a Shawlands Mosque has prompted objections from local people.

The Jamia Islamia Islamic religious centre and Muslim community centre has been through a number of developments in recent years to meet the needs of the community.

A recent application to Glasgow city council’s planning department identifies the necessity for a mortuary service.

The application stated: “The community has identified a requirement for a proper facility where they can carry out the funeral and body preparations processes laid down in their creed.

“Since the mosque was established in 1986, it has grown with the surrounding Muslim community and, in the process, has developed into a major community centre.

“There is a desperate need to build a funeral parlour or body preparation room.”

Councillor Archie Graham, who has supported the extension of the centre during previous planning applications, believes there is no longer enough room for the mosque to continue to grow.

He told The Extra: “In my opinion the site is now operating at full capacity and the proposal would be an over development of the site.”

Rena McDonald, who lives on Tantallon Road where the mosque is currently situated, added: “The site is overly developed.

“This will make parking even more horrendous, and that is especially dangerous with Langside primary school just a few doors down.

“A mortuary in a developed area doesn’t make sense. I don’t understand why the council would consider it.”
