Controversial library hub will open as planned this month

KIRKINTILLOCH’S library will reopen at the end of this month – complete with a ‘one-stop-shop’ which sparked fury among concerned locals.

William Patrick Library was closed in June to allow work on a community hub project.

However, angry residents claimed the work would reduce floorspace at the library and diminish services.

They staged several protests and collected a petition, but it was ultimately to no avail.

East Dunbartonshire Council has repeatedly insisted the hub is good news and will be welcomed.

However, one Herald reader said: “There doesn’t seem to be any chance of them finishing on time now.

“All they seem to have done is knock down some walls and you never seem to see anybody working there.

“I just hope this doesn’t drag on for months and ends up costing twice as much as it was meant to.”

But East Dunbartonshire Council says the £500,000 project is on schedule.

The council’s head of assets and property services, Grace Irvine, said: “The programme of works at the William Patrick Library is on target and the community hub will open as scheduled on Monday, August 27.”

The community hub development has sparked a massive public outcry, with library users concerned that it could impact on the service. More than 1,600 people have signed a petition opposing the plans.
