Controversial library plans must be revealed, insist campaigners

COUNCIL chiefs were remaining tight-lipped this week over controversial plans to convert part of Kirkintilloch’s William Patrick Library into a community hub.

East Dunbartonshire Council wants to use an area on the ground floor of the library as a ‘one-stop’ shop.

The facility would provide access to many of the services currently delivered from council offices at Tom Johnston House.

The book-lending section of the library will close for three months on June 3, to allow builders to carry out the construction work.

But when the Herald asked the council for more detailed plans, it said it could not provide them until nearer the time of the library closing, in just under three weeks.

Some Herald readers have blasted the plans, claiming they will ‘decimate’ the library and ‘exacerbate’ the parking problems at the facility.

Award-winning author Theresa Breslin has also hit out at the move and wants the council to use one of the empty shops in the town centre for the hub.

And Kirkintilloch & District Soroptimists have also called for the council to reconsider the move.
