Controversial plan to extend Clyde Windfarm

A PROPOSED extension to the Clyde Windfarm at Abington has produced a furious response from Clydesdale MSP Karen Gillon.

The extension to the windfarm, which will be Europe's largest on completion, would see over 200 wind turbines being erected — originally, planning permission was granted for 152.

Scottish and Southern Energy Renewables (SSE) said that plans, which could see a further 67 turbines creating 50 megawatts of energy, were in the very early stages.

However, Karen argued this week that the original windfarm was large enough.

"The current development is the product of a long running and expensive inquiry process," she said. "I'm therefore surprised that SSE Renewables is now seeking to extend the windfarm.

"By acting in this piecemeal fashion, SSE has damaged its reputation and caused me to question its conduct."

Clydesdale MP David Mundell and South of Scotland MSP Aileen Campbell also aired their concerns to the Gazette this week.

A public exhibition on the proposals is being held in the Abington Hotel on Wednesday, June 9, from 3pm to 7pm.
