Controversial school build moves forward

The new school will be built in Cowan Park, close to the existing building, which will remain open throughout construction.

The cost — originally estimated at £22 million — is being met jointly by the authority and the Scottish Futures Trust.

However, ERC faces further bills, due to a lost legal battle in the Court of Session where the area originally earmarked for development was deemed not to be common good land.

A council spokeswoman said: “The European accounting issue — which caused a delay on the project — has now been resolved, which means the council has a green light to progress the project towards financial close and then construction.”

Councillor Elaine Green, convener for education and equalities, added: “I am delighted to welcome the news that work on the new Barrhead High can now move forward. We are fully committed to building a fantastic facility, as quickly as possible, that the young people of Barrhead deserve.”

Deputy first minister John Swinney has confirmed that Barrhead High plans will progress as part of a £330 million investment in 10 new schools and two new health centres.

Stewart Maxwell, the Barrhead-based west of Scotland MSP, welcomed the news, and commented: “The replacement building is long overdue, and I will be urging East Renfrewshire Council to work with the Scottish Futures Trust and the community to ensure that there are no further unnecessary delays.”
