Council has admitted bin collection problem.

The promise came after a North Motherwell resident told the Times & Speaker he had handed back his food waste bin because he was fed up waiting for it to be emptied.

Recently North Lanarkshire Council announced plans to give households another bin for glass as efforts to improve recycling are stepped up.

However, Andrew Todd, of Cornelia Street, said: “I don’t know why they they’re doing this when they can’t cope with the bins they have.”

Mr Todd said he gave back his food waste bin several months ago because, despite complaints to the council, it wasn’t being emptied on the scheduled day.

He explained: “I was putting the bin out day after day and bringing it back in at night - still not emptied - because I didn’t want it being stolen.

“We also had problems getting the garden waste bin emptied.”

A council spokesman adamitted: “We have had service delivery problems and apologise to the residents concerned.

“Part of the problem was due to a shortage of staffing, but we have addressed this by employing more drivers and loaders.

“We are also looking to realign the routes to help improve the collection of food waste recycling.

“Our local management team will continue to monitor the situation.”

Mr Todd said bosses have now assured people the service will improve and he is happy to take back his food bin.
