Council blasted over '˜farm track' local roads

Clarkston, Netherlee and Williamwood independent councillor David McDonald has also savaged the authority’s move to allot £600,000 in funds to local road repairs that will be decided by an X-Factor style public vote.

He said: I’m sure residents of The Oval, Orchy Gardens and other roads will be absolutely thrilled to hear that the car park of East Renfrewshire Council headquarers is being resurfaced, and that the work will take six weeks.

“I’ll be raising the issue as to why the council deem it necessary to tackle this area prior to dealing with the countless roads outside people’s homes that are falling into such a bad state of disrepair that they resemble farm tracks rather than paved roads.

“The car park is of far lesser importance to the community in terms of necessity.”

He added: “To have the council throw £600,000 up in the air for a social media contest as to where the money should be spent - combined with having Eastwood Park car park resurfaced - is totally outrageous.”

He says his constituents want to know how much is being spent on the Eastwood Park work.

East Renfrewshire Council says the work is being carried out on the main car park, and that a range of different groups will benefit.

These include users of the gym and leisure facilities, theatre-goers, community groups, St Ninian’s High School users and people who visit the council HQ building (including employees there)

The car park is being levelled, resurfaced and improved drainage installed.

A spokesperson said: “These works will have a big impact on access for what is one of our biggest and busiest campuses in East Renfrewshire, particularly for those with mobility issues.”

The council also wants to clarify that the work is not being carried out on the separate staff and councillor car park.

The project is scheduled for six weeks, and is being carried out in four phases during the school summer holidays in order to minimise disruption as much as possible.
