Council dishes out a pre-Christmas tax shocker

Red-faced East Renfrewshire council chiefs have told residents that tax cash which isn't due until December 28 was collected yesterday.

In a statement confessing the blunder, the council says: “Unfortunately this has occurred due to an internal processing error and this is currently being investigated.

“We advise customers to check their bank accounts to see if they have been affected and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

It adds: “This payment will not be collected again on the 28th.

Residents can contact their bank to instruct the return of funds but they will need to arrange to make this Council Tax payment on the 28th.

“Any bank charges incurred by residents as a result of this error will also be reimbursed by the council”.
