IDAHO was created in 2004 to draw the attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public and the media to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and inter-sex (LGBTI) people internationally.

The council is committed to eliminating all forms of prejudice and discrimination and flew the Rainbow Flag to send out a strong message to communities and employees it will stand shoulder to shoulder with people who have experienced discrimination and violence because of who they are.

North Lanarkshire provost Jim Robertson said: “We want to raise awareness of the impact homophobia, biphobia and transphobia continues to have on LGBTI people and communities, and also recognise the positive contribution of LGBTI people locally.”

The date of May 17 marks the date that homosexuality was removed from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organisation in 1990.

North Lanarkshire Council is also a Stonewall Scotland Diversity Champion.
