Council gets set to snoop on your bins

Snoopers are set to pry into people’s bins to find out what is in them.

East Dunbartonshire Council (EDC) and Zero Waste Scotland are trying to discover exactly what people are throwing out.

With the ultimate aim of improving already high recycling rates, waste officers will examine random collection samples, beginning on January 13.

Councillor Ashay Ghai, depute leader of the council and convenor of neighbourhood services, said: “In East Dunbartonshire we already have some of the highest rates of recycling throughout the country and our residents should be proud of the efforts they have already made.

“These figures can always be improved though and the aim of these surveys is to find out if there’s any item which is regularly being sent to landfill which could be recycled.

“When we find that out, we can pass this message on to residents, which will hopefully lead to even higher recycling rates in East Dunbartonshire.”

A small sample of refuse and recycling collections will be chosen at random and emptied into a separate waste vehicle during January.

However, residents shouldn’t notice any change to their regular collections.

This study will enable both EDC and other authorities to plan ahead, and help them meet the Scottish Government’s challenging waste targets, which expect householders to recycle 60 per cent of their waste by 2020.
