Council has secured funding to design new roundabout

The aim is to create a safer roundabout inspired by a people-friendly popular design in the Netherlands.

It is one of five “exemplary” ideas for potential funding as part of the Community Links Plus initiative after it was shortlisted by sustainable transport charity Sustrans.

The proposals also suggest a continuation of the Bears Way along arterial routes, including to Milngavie town centre precinct and the train station.

Being shortlisted secures additional funding for the council to develop the preliminary proposals - which includes improvements in Main Street and Woodburn Way.

Councillor Alan Moir, convener of development and regeneration, said: “We are delighted to be among the five Scottish projects shortlisted for this funding - potentially paving the way for significant investment in the Milngavie area.

“It’s tremendous news and I commend all the officers on their work to bring fresh investment to East Dunbartonshire at a time when the council’s finances are under extreme pressure.

“This is an outline concept proposal at the moment and any detailed plans will be subject to engagement with the community and stakeholders.”

Sustrans’ key criteria for shortlisted projects included robust community engagement plans, high standards of design quality and innovation, deliverability and partnership work.

The final five proposals - which now go through to Stage Three of Community Links Plus - will receive £35,000 for more detailed design work.

One or two projects will be awarded a final grant - the sum of money depends on the scheme or schemes, and the level of funding set for active travel by the Scottish Government in the forthcoming Draft Budget Bill
