Council houses to be built on four sites

Work to build 30 homes in Cardowan Drive, 16 homes on the site of Kildrum Nursery and 11 homes on the site of Cedar Road Nursery is expected to start later this year, while 20 homes on Brown Road is at the design development stage.

Each site will contain a mix of cottage flats and family homes, and is part of the council’s current £172 million investment programme to build 1,150 new homes, of which 356 have been completed.

In addition to the Cumbernauld houses work is expected to start at nine other sites across North Lanarkshire over the next 18 months to build 205 homes, with a contribution being received from the Scottish Government towards the development costs at each.

Signs are now in place on the sites so residents know what’s planned.

Housing and Social Work convener Barry McCulloch said: “We consistently listen and act on the views of our tenants, and through consultation they have told us they would like us to provide more new council homes.

“We’re putting our tenants’ priorities at the heart of our service and NL Homes supports our vision to provide affordable, good quality homes within safe and sustainable communities for the people of North Lanarkshire.

“In addition, our investment also supports the building industry and provides local employment opportunities.

“Our new signage marks the next phase of our new build programme and I’m confident we can continue to deliver new homes that meet the needs of our communities.”

In addition to building new homes in this year’s budget the council committed to investing £250 million in improvements to its existing housing stock over the next five years.

Council leader Jim Logue said: “I am very proud we have been able to commit this level of investment in new and improved housing and I look forward to seeing these sites taking shape and becoming part of local communities.”
