Councillor asks drivers to ‘calm down’ at M77 junction

Concerns over cars driving at high speed at the Crookfur junction and at the M77 on and off ramps has prompted action by East Ren Conservative councillor Charlie Gilbert.

The Newton Mearns councillor has written to East Ren council asking them to look into ways of making the junction safer for pedestrians.

He told The Extra: “I’ve been advised that a full survey has been carried out in that area and the officer has recommended introducing a pedestrian crossing point and, perhaps, some advisory signage.

“I understand the council will be exploring funding sources for any proposed work.

“I certainly don’t want to see this fastpaced driving being allowed to carry on.”

Councillor Gilbert, however, says that the council’s role in keeping pedestrians and drivers safe is only one side of the coin and that commonsense should prevail when driving or crossing at busy junctures.

He said: “There is a there is a controlled pedestrian crossing closer to the Isobel Mair facility and it would only be a short diversion for mums with prams or parents crossing with children but drivers need also to exercise calm when approaching the roundabout or driving on or off the ramps from the M77, and keep their eyes open for pedestrians.”

He added that the council needn’t be looking to fund the extra costs of road safety measures if drivers and pedestrians were more vigilant.
