Councillor calls for enhanced powers over Govanhill

A southside councillor is calling on Glasgow City Council to apply to the Scottish Government for additional powers to tackle Govanhill housing problems.

Councillor Soryia Siddique has asked GCC to use Enhanced Enforcement Areas legislation, introduced under the Housing (Scotland) Act 2014, to target poor conditions in private lets.

Councillor Siddique told The Extra: “The council has spent substantial amounts in maintaining housing stock in the area. However, there are continued challenges.

“Additional powers will allow the council to enforce housing standards. This, combined with multimillion housing investment, will help make Govanhill a far better place to live.”

GCC approved a £9.3 million plan in February to bring Govanhill housing up to standard, aiming to bring four blocks into social housing hands.
