Council’s decision to postpone school official openings is blasted

SOUTH Lanarkshire Council’s decision to postpone the official opening of two Carluke primary schools due to weather fears has been blasted by furious parents.

The local authority called off the High Mill and Victoria Park ceremonies – which had been scheduled for Friday morning – on Thursday afternoon after seeing a weather forecast warning of heavy snow.

But, in an ironic twist, Carluke roads remained clear of snow.

Andrew Wilson, whose 11-year-old daughter Kirsty attends Victoria Park School, said he was “hugely disappointed” with the early postponement.

Andrew added: “I understand staff and children had put in hours of work rehearsing routines to entertain at the opening.

“Catering had been organised and the plaque will have to be re-made as it had Friday’s date on it!”

Andrew blasted the fact that the council, despite protecting an expected 80 guests from having to travel on potentially hazardous roads, had NOT closed Victoria Park or High Mill Primaries and staff and pupils were expected to attend.
