Craighalbert team cycle for Zambia

Craighalbert Church members Nigel Glover and Graeme Walsh undertook a 500-mile, four-day trek around Scotland to help the Ipsukilo Children’s Trust provide housing and carers for 16 orphans.

Accompanying them is a support team of fellow churchgoers including Joyce Campbell who is riding part of the route with them.

On Monday the News and Chronicle caught up with Nigel as his team stopped for a break at Nairn, 230 miles into their epic journey.

“We’re about halfway through and so far it’s been fine,” he said. “Though yesterday we rode for 110 miles directly into the wind, which made things a lot harder. However we’ve not suffered any injuries and we’re just trying to look after each other.”

This partnership between a Cumbernauld church and an African charity was forged when ICT founder Kelvin Samwata -who renounced a high-flying career in finance to set up his charity - visited Scotland about 18 months ago. “Kelvin spoke at the church and was truly inspirational,” said Nigel.

So far this has raised around £2,000 though Nigel is hopeful that total can be boosted even further. “We’re amazed and very thankful that so many people have supported us to date, but we’re hoping one or two heavy hitters will come in with a big donation,” he said. “Everything needed for this challenge has been donated to us, so every penny we raise will help the project.”
