At Lanark Sheriff Court last week Andrew Smith (48) of Gavin Street pleaded guilty to driving along Hyndford Road while four times the drink-drive limit.

The court heard that at 8pm on January 25 police noticed Smith’s car crossing the central white line of the road and almost colliding with their patrol car.

They flagged him down and immediately realised he was under the influence of alcohol. A blood test later confirmed that.

His solicitor said that Smith had taken drink during a long lunch with a friend and made what he himself said was his stupidest-ever decision by not taking a taxi home.

Sheriff Robert Weir banned him from driving for 16 months and fined him £400.
