Bonfire Night disorder in Pollokshields condemned

Throughout the evening officers responded to numerous calls of the reckless behaviour in the area and enquiries are ongoing to identify those responsible.

In one of the most serious incidents, around 10.20 pm, officers attended the Herriet Street and Albert Drive area following reports of a group of between 30 and 40 youths, wearing masks, setting off fireworks indiscriminately, which caused damage to windows and struck passing cars. On arrival the youths threw fireworks and other objects at the officers. Specialist national public order officers were deployed to assist in dispersing this group and a 17-year-old male youth will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with the incident.

Chief Inspector Ross Allan, area commander for Glasgow South East, said: “Much of the disorder appears to have been pre-planned and I cannot stress strongly enough that this sort of disorder is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. It is fortunate that no officers or members of the public were injured, although I am aware residents were distressed and upset by the disorder.

“Despite the extensive planning and local engagement undertaken in advance of Halloween and Bonfire Night it is extremely disappointing that there are people who are reckless enough to set off what appears to be professional or industrial firework in the vicinity of houses.

“We will carrying out investigations into who sold these.

“Our enquiries to identify those involved are ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area and witnessed the actions is urged to get in touch with Police Scotland.”

Officers are carrying out door to door-to door enquiries and reviewing CCTV footage to help identify those involved. High-visibility patrols in the area are being increased to help reassure local residents and businesses.

Chief Inspector Allan continued: “The foolish actions of those responsible could have had much more serious consequences. I am appealing for anyone who may have information about the identity of those involved or who may have mobile phone footage of any of the incident to get in touch with Police Scotland as a matter of urgency on 101.”
