Clydesdale car crime rife

CLYDESDALE has been a hotbed of motor vehicle thefts in recent weeks, with several such crimes having occurred in Carluke, Kirkmuirhill and Lesmahagow.

Thieves are taking advantage of complacency from car owners in leaving keys or goods like sat navs, tablets or mobile phones visible within their vehicles.

“Breaking into cars is an ongoing method of crime for getting valuables to turn into cash,” said PC David Wesencraft of Lanark Police.

“Entry is being gained by a variety of means. Assailants are acquiring vehicle keys by theft; taking them from insecure premises when left on open display.

“Vehicles are also targeted directly with thieves breaking windows or unlocked car doors giving easy access.

“Thieves are then either driving or towing the vehicle away or grabbing whatever valuables are in sight prior to making off.

“But such crimes can be thwarted with a bit of well placed diligence from the public.”
