He also denied driving while over the drink limit, failing to stop and failing to report the crash to the police.

It’s alleged the boy was injured when the car hit him in Second Avenue, Birkenshaw, on August 21.

Cardwell is accused of driving too fast while under the influence of alcohol and failing to observe the youngster who was crossing the road. The prosecution claims that rather than stop after the collision he drove away.

Cardwell was given bail and faces trial in January.
