Messages of support sent across the Channel from Cumbernauld and Kilsyth

Members of the twinning association which has linked Kilsyth with Meulan near the French capital were quick to act by contacting their dear friends by Facebook and email.

Chairman Kay Thomson said: “Members are appalled and deeply saddened. Our thoughts are with the families of the dead and hopes for the recovery of the injured.’’

Cumbernauld Rugby Club members have linked up with their French counterpart in Cumbernauld’s twin town of Bron for three decades.

President Jim Cochrane said: “Given that it’s vital that as part of the worldwide rugby community, we take this opportunity to express our horror but at the same time, re-assure our French friends that our prayers and thoughts are with them at this sad time.

“Hopefully out of this darkness will come light as we unite in the brotherhood of sport to share our grief and offer what support we can to our French friends.”

Aspiring cooks at Cumbernauld College have long had links not just Bron but the nearby city of Lyon which is often credited as being France’s culinary capital.

The college is currently working with 22 strong-party of French students and staff who are living in Glasgow.

Course organiser Paul Clark said: “We were in contact with them over the weekend and this week to offer support.

“We’ve extended any support that we’d show our own students if required.

“While the group seem to be shocked by the events, they’ve had a couple of days off together and will go back to work today (Wednesday).”
