The Christmas lights were switched on last month, and on Thursday the council put the decorations on St Nicholas Church - but all the lights, even those on the Christmas tree, then went off, and each night the Cross was dark.

On Monday night the the lights were back on, and on Tuesday Gordon Mackay, the council's head of roads, told the Gazette: “The festive lighting installation was switched off and cables unplugged by vandals several times last weekend.

“Each time this happened we restored it to working order but the vandals struck again.

"We inspected the area again last night (Monday) and, at that point, all festive lighting remained fully operational.

“Police Scotland have been made aware of the problem and have agreed to monitor the area.

"Additional security measures will also be implemented today (Tuesday).”
