Cumbernauld cadets are off to a flying start

2496 Cumbernauld Squadron Air Cadets have been given a minibus from The Royal Air Force Charitable Trust (RAFCT) and North Lanarkshire Council.A ceremonial handover took place with numerous VIP guests in attendance- and some even given virtual flying lessons.

A ceremonial handover took place with numerous VIP guests in attendance- and some even given virtual flying lessons.

Air Marshal Sir Kevin Leeson, KCB, CBE, FREng, CEng, FIET, RAF Retd, chairman of the RAFCT and the Provost of North Lanarkshire Jim Robertson, Deputy Provost Jean Jones and other VIPs including Rt Hon Gregg McClymont MP and MSP Jamie Hepburn attended the presentation event held at 2496 Cumbernauld Squadron Headquarters in Glencryan Road, Cumbernauld.

Sir Kevin said: “I am proud to be able to present the minibus on behalf of the RAFCT to allow the air cadets of Cumbernauld Squadron to assist the community even more as part of their citizenship training.”

Provost Robertson said: “I am delighted that North Lanarkshire Council was involved in this project aimed at community engagement and was pleased to be able to provide £6500 of funding in this innovative community project to allow the squadron to be able to tow the squadron’s mobile flight simulator to many community council events held in North Lanarkshire; and allow disabled citizens to experience the freedom of virtual flight due to the simulator’s accessibility”.

Stewart Campbell (Squadron Civilian Committee chairman) told the audience: “I can’t thank the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and North Lanarkshire for the generous funding provided to the squadron.”

Flight Lieutenant Stevie Cairns, Officer Commanding 2496 Cumbernauld Squadron, said: “For many years since I was here as a cadet and as the longest serving staff team member in the squadron’s history. The owning of a minibus has been a dream and I am delighted that all the hard work of the Squadron’s Civilian Committee has paid off. I can’t thank them enough.”
