Cumbernauld couple are diamond geezers

A Cumbernauld couple who were among the first to live in Carbrain have celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary.

Gordon and Elizabeth Hanning, now of Mossgiel Road in Kildrum, had extra cause to celebrate as Gordon’s 86th birthday coincides with their 60th wedding anniversary.

The couple’s courtship was hardly unusual for Glasgow-based lovebirds as they met in the Barrowland Ballroom.

However, Gordon was posted to Egypt on his national service just two weeks later so his wooing was done by letters to his lady love.

Nearly two years passed before the pair were wed at Dalmarnock Congregational Church.

Shortly after they joined a host of Cumbernauld Development Corporation employees in what was the first development beyond
Kildrum.

Joiner Gordon worked for the CDC for 20 years but was also an employee of John Brown in Clydebank and worked on legendary vessels like the QE2.

Elizabeth (80) was a machinist but also worked at Swords Pies.

Married life brought them two sons and a daughter plus six grandchildren.

Both Gordon and Elizabeth agree that married life is about a realistic attitude plus give and take.

Elizabeth said: “Nobody is perfect and we’ve all got our faults but you’ve just got to work together.

Gordon added: “That’s right but I also think it’s got to do with true love.”
