Cumbernauld couple celebrate their platinum anniversary

A CUMBERNAULD couple have celebrated an incredible marital milestone.

For Robert Sutherland (96) and 94-year-old wife Jessie Sutherland (94) marked their PLATINUM anniversary - meaning they been married for 70 years.

The couple were joined by North Lanarkshire Provost Tom Curley and Brian Miller, Depute Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, at Chilterns residential home in Chryston to celebrate their big day.

Having previously lived in Sefar in Cumbernauld, the Plantinum Anniversary couple were married in 1941 during the Second World War at the Rhul Restaurant in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow before enjoying their honeymoon in Oban.

Robert and Jessie met when they both worked as office clerks at the Heinz food factory. Robert also went on to work for the Reid Group becoming director of waste paper reclamation.

Provost Curley said: “It was a great honour to be able to help Robert and Jessie share their special day and reaching their platinum anniversary shows their dedication to each other.”

The couple have a daughter Moira, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
