Cumbernauld jannie is a mod winner

ALEX MacDonald last week set aside his week-day job as janitor at Cumbernauld Village Hall to become an award-winning singer – and a TV star.

After many years competing at the Royal National Mod, Gaelic singer Alex (60), who lives in Moodiesburn, excelled himself this year by winning the Traditional Gold Medal in the first competition to be televised live from Dunoon by BBC Alba.

“I’m delighted,” he said. “There were a large number of entries in the qualifying rounds on the Tuesday when each of us had to sing one song.

“Gradually, the numbers were gradually reduced to four for the final on Thursday when we each had to sing two songs.

“Although I’ve been competing for many years, this is only the second time I’ve attempted the gold medal.

“On this occasion, I decided to sing family songs from the Isle of Lewis where I was brought up. It was a great feeling to win and hold those trophies.”
