Cumbernauld jobs saved despite retailer going into administration

SHOPPERS snapped up bargains in Cumbernauld as a major sports retailer announced it is in administration.

JJB sports shop held a half price sale in its Cumbernauld store in the Antonine Shopping Centre following the announcement that it is to be saved by rivals Sports Direct.

Sports Direct is set to take over 20 JJB stores - including Cumbernauld - saving some 550 jobs.

The move – which includes Sports Direct buying the JJB brand and website – has saved a total of 11 jobs in Cumbernauld.

The JJB chain of sports shops closed 26 of its Scottish stores on Monday with more than 350 jobs being lost.

Nearly 2,000 more jobs are to go in other parts of the UK, with a total of the Wigan-based retailer’s 133 shops to close.

Richard Fleming, the UK head of restructuring at KPMG, said: “Successive attempts to restructure the business, both financially and operationally, have not been enough to prevent the company falling into administration.

“Unfortunately a buyer could only be found for 20 stores on a going concern basis.”
