Cumbernauld kids aim to cook up cash for Kenya

For the youngsters are determined to send over vital items to a school in Burani, after a member of staff made contact with locals while on holiday.

Clerical assisstant Christine Munro told her colleagues about the poverty in a rural school and the school has been on a fundraising drive ever since. It’s estimated that pupils have raised more than £2000 so far through events like Dress Down Days.

And they have even produced a cookbook to raise cash for their Kenyan counterparts.

Christine said: “The children love getting involved. We have also sent over items like pencils, school uniforms and the Kenyan children are so grateful.

“A lot of them don’t have electricity at home, so we provided a television for them to watch in school. We are now hoping to fundraise for a DVD player,” she added.

It is because of this link that the local pupils are so enamoured of Fairtrade initiatives as Kenya is one of the key beneficiaries of the scheme.

To this end, the pupils will raise more money by dressing up in either the blue or green hues that are the colours of the Fairtrade movement – and the money will again be donated to Kenya.
