Cumbernauld Labour man's home trashed

A Cumbernauld councillor was targeted by callous thieves who broke into his home, wrecked his property and robbed it.

Veteran councillor Stephen Grant admitted on Facebook that even his bed had been partially torched by the raiders after they gained access to his home in Afton Road overnight on Sunday in his absence.

He returned to find disturbing signs of deliberate damage across his home.

Police are also investigating the theft of several key items from the house which has been combed by forensics.

Sadly the thieves grabbed number of watches which belonged to the councillor’s late wife who died last May in a car accident.

The councillor had also amassed a special collection of whiskies whose labels had been signed by Prime Ministers and the bottles were also taken in the raid.

Mr Grant’s Facebook post said: “Just when you think things are taking a turn for the better. Some lowlife scum broke into my house and wrecked the place. If anyone knows who did this then I would love to have a wee chat with them.”

Chief Inspector David Bruce said: “I’d urge anyone with information to contact us on 101 or anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.”
