Cumbernauld man gets plum role on new trust

A CUMBERNAULD community activist has won a key post on the new body which now oversees local libraries and community centres.

Adam Smith who pens the Community Connections column of this newspaper will also be well known to our readers from his work with Cumbernauld Environmental Forum and Friends of Cumbernauld House Park, to name but two.

The 30-year-old from Kildrum, who works at HMRC, now has a new role to add to his remit as he was chosen to be the independent director of Culture NL.

Much like the leisure services which once came under North Lanarkshire Council’s remit, the amenities will now be run as a registered charity, thus saving on non-domestic rates to the tune of £1 million. The changeover will also make the facilities eligible for grants.

Adam who is a former pupil of Greenfaulds High School said: “I am delighted to have been appointed and I look forward to assisting in the delivery of quality community and cultural facilities and services throughout North Lanarkshire.’’

The organisation is headed up by another face who may be familiar to locals – Labour Councillor Heather McVey from Kilsyth who was elected last May.
