After winning their group which included Switzerland, Russian and Greece, the team played Ireland in the semi-final and following a tight match emerged 3-2 winners.

They then faced Russia in the final and triumphed 4-1 after extra time.

In the swimming competition, Alexandra Bryce won a silver medal in Girls 400m Freestyle, while Cameron Watkins won bronze in the 100m freestyle.

Another Taekwon-do competitor Rebekah-Anne Wilkie took home a silver medal to add to Team Lanarkshire’s tally.

Blane Dodds, chief executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure and head of delegation, said: “The welcome we received in Daegu was fantastic. It was an honour to hand the Games ‘baton’ on after the tremendous competition we held in Lanarkshire last year.

“This year, we were only permitted a maximum team of 18 athletes, and given that Team Lanarkshire competed against some of the best young athletes in the world in the 12 to 15 age groups, the medal success is something to be really proud of.
