Cumbernauld turns on the lights

WITH just over a month’s shopping left til Christmas, Cumbernauld’s shopping centres helped spread some festive cheer with the grand switching on of the Christmas lights.

The centre management teams organised a great variety of entertainers, special guests and treats for shoppers to mark the occasion, with special guests including Britain’s Got Talent star Edward Reid to Dora the Explorer and Miss European, Deone Robertson. And of course a certain jolly, bearded fellow in a red and white suit featured prominently in proceedings too.

In the Antonine Centre there were also games and activities to try your hand at, from making an indoor snowman out of toilet tissue to balloon dog making, and singer Damien Hendry helped entertain shoppers, as did the Salvation Army band.

The Antonine Centre also welcomed its namesake band of Roman history re-enactors, the Antonine Guard, who proved a striking sight in their replica armour.

Depute provost Jean Jones joined the fun over in Cumbernauld Shopping Centre as she was invited to join Dora the Explorer, Edward Reed and friends for their part of the big switch on.

This was synchronised across all events with the lights on Central Way outside the centre also linked up to come on at the same time as the outdoor lights.

Hundreds of locals turned out to enjoy the events and traders will be hoping to do brisk business in the build up to the big day. Keep an eye out for all sorts of Christmas shopping bargains.
