Cumbernauld water pipes to be upgraded in 12-week project

The severe winter weather ravaged old pipes, leading to bursts and water shortages.

Now Scottish Water has announced that the upgrade project, due to start this week, should last roughly 12 weeks and will see pipes re-lined with new material providing a quick curing time and better water quality.

Project manager Jim Auldjo said that there may be some disruption to water supplies in the area but that prior notice would be given at least 48 hours in advance.

Councillor Danny Carrigan welcomed the news but said: “I have asked Scottish Water to clarify if this latest activity is likely to lead to road and streetworks, and closures. If so can we be assured that these will be kept to a minimum and that liaison will take place with the council and other utility providers to ensure that any road or street excavation is coordinated.”

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “There will be some alterations to traffic movements during the construction period but there will be no road closures.

“Traffic management will be in place that will mean some roads are reduced to one lane with traffic lights regulating traffic flow.

“Scottish Water will make every effort to minimise any impact on road users.”

He added: “We have mailed a customer information pack to all customers which contains an electrical earthing leaflet, a copy of the guide to our water mains improvement programme, a special needs/business requirements form and a reminder card to hang on the kitchen tap.”

The contractor for the work - an investment of £623,000 – is Farrans.

The project, to upgrade 10.5km (6.5 miles) of water mains, started on Monday and it’s thought will take around 12 weeks to complete.
