The walker is understood to have suffered an injury to her eye and cuts and bruises, and has taken to social media to thank local people who came to her aid.

She posted: I fractured my eye socket walloping my face off the pathway and am full of gravel. Bruises and scrapes heal though.

“A few lovely people stopped to help and made sure they stayed with me until help arrived. I really appreciate this.”

She added: “It was at the very start of the path. I never heard the cyclist at all and I’m sure he didn’t intend to hit me. The poor guy ended up in the canal. It was an accident. I always step aside for cyclists as I like to cycle myself.”
