David Wylie goes from Lanark Grammar pupil to Edinburgh University professor

A BOYHOOD interest in science when he was a pupil at Lanark Grammar School has, 30 years later, led to David Wylie acquiring the highly impressive title of Professor of Ion Physiology and Pharmacology at Edinburgh University.

However, it could have all been so different, 44-year-old David revealed this week on the news of his elevation to one of the country’s top academic posts in his field.

“I remember fondly my last year at the Grammar, particularly the classes in maths and chemistry, and that is why I initially chose these subjects when I went to Glasgow University.

“However, a change in direction after two years meant that I read for a Pharmacology degree, graduating in 1988.
